PRESIDENT: INTER-INSTITUTIONAL FRICTIONS MUST NOT HAMPER CORRUPTION ERADICATION EFFORTS

Jakarta, July 13 (ANTARA) - Frictions between law enforcing institutions should not hamper the corruption eradication efforts in the country, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Monday.

The president made the statement at a coordinative cabinet meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla and related ministers at the presidential office.

On the occasion, Yudhoyono said frictions and competition had occurred between state law enforcing institutions in the performance of their respective tasks and functions but this should not hamper the government's efforts to combat corruption in the country.

"Frankly speaking, some time ago there was friction between the Supreme Court and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and now there is friction between the KPK and the National Police (Polri)," the president said.

The president said the frictions were blown up by the media as the result of the state institutions' transparency in carrying out their tasks.

But the institutions concerned should not only issue public statements to the media or resort to "megaphone diplomacy" but also find the best possible solutions to their problems through communication and synergy.

The institutions concerned, the president said, should also try to avoid creating wrong perceptions among the public such as had happened in the case of the arrest of KPK Chairman Antasari Azhar which many in the public had mistakenly seen as being part of a plot to undermine the anti-graft body. .

Antasari's case had created friction between KPK and the Police, but the president said the state institutions concerned should be able to explain the issues at hand transparently to the public.

Yudhoyono at the cabinet meeting reiterated his commitment to eradicating corruption without letup.

Present at the meeting which was also attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla were Supreme Court chairman Harifin Tumpa, Constitutional Court chairman Mahfud MD, Supreme Audit Board chairman Anwar Nasution, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPU) vice chairmen Chandra Hamzah, Bibit Samad Riyanto, Haryono Umar, and M Yasin, Development Finance Comptrolling Agency chairman Didi Widayadi, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affaris Widodo AS, Law and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalatta, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji, National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri, and State Minister for Administrative Reforms Taufik Effendy. ***
