ACEHNESE ULEMA CALL FOR STOP TO XINJIANG VIOLENCE

Jakarta, July 13 (ANTARA) - Secretary of the Dayah Aceh Ulema Association (HUDA) Tgk Faisal Aly Monday appealed to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to urge the Chinese government to stop the violence against Uighur people in the Muslim region of Xinjiang.

"We are very concerned about the fact that violence still happens in advanced countries. We hope President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will urge the Chinese government to stop the violence against the ethnic Uighurs in the region," he said when contacted from Jakarta.

He said the Indonesian government, along with other countries should at least ask the Chinese government to clarify the unrest between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese.

"Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country. Don't let the ethnic violence in China prompt various reactions and actions in other parts of the world," he said.

He expressed concern about the ethnic violence in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, which left hundreds of people dead.

Almost half of Xinjiang's 20 million people are Muslim Uighurs, but they have long complained Han Chinese reap most of the benefits of official investment and subsidies.

Violence erupted last week in Uruqmi.

The official Xinhua news agency quoting the regional government reported last Saturday the death toll from violence in Urumqi had risen to 184.

On July 5, Chinese authorities banned any public gathering in Urumqi.

Faisal called on the Indonesian Muslims to give moral support to the government's diplomatic mission to urge China to stop the violence.
Indonesian Ambassador to China Sudrajat said on Sunday the Indonesian government would not interfere in the events in Uruqmi.

"What is happening in Xinjiang is China's internal affair. We respect China's sovereignty over the region and will not meddle in the problem," he said.***
