PRESIDENT : PERPPU ON CORRUPTION COURT ONLY AS LAST RESORT
Jakarta, July 13 (ANTARA) - A government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on formation of a corruption court will be issued as a last resort, namely if the House of Representatives (DPR) proves unable to pass a relevant law.
Chairing a coordination meeting on corruption eradication efforts with related ministers at the presidential office here on Monday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed hope that he and the DPR could complete discussions on the bill on formation of the corruption court within the next few months.
"It is my expectation that the United Indonesia Cabinet and the House of Representatives will be able to complete discussions on the bill before December 19, 2009," the President said.
Although the president had the power to issue a Perppu to save the existing special corruption court, it was better to encourage the DPR to enact a law on formation of a corruption court in the normal way, he said.
"Issuing a Perppu is not the best way out. We still have time to encourage the DPR to complete the legislative process," the president said at a coordinative meeting with related ministers to discuss corruption eradication efforts.
On the occasion, the president also said frictions between law enforcing institutions should not hamper the corruption eradication efforts in the country.
The president said frictions and competition had occurred between state law enforcing institutions in the performance of their respective tasks and functions but this should not hamper the government's efforts to combat corruption in the country.
"Frankly speaking, some time ago there was friction between the Supreme Court and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and now there is friction between the KPK and the National Police (Polri)," the president said.
Present at the meeting which was also attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla were Supreme Court chairman Harifin Tumpa, Constitutional Court chairman Mahfud MD, Supreme Audit Board chairman Anwar Nasution, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPU) vice chairmen Chandra Hamzah, Bibit Samad Riyanto, Haryono Umar, and M Yasin, Development Finance Comptrolling Agency chairman Didi Widayadi, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affaris Widodo AS, Law and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalatta, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji, National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri, and State Minister for Administrative Reforms Taufik Effendy.***
