PRESIDENT: CORRUPTION ERADICATION EFFORTS TO BE STRENGTHENED

Jakarta, July 13 (ANTARA) - The government will strengthen corruption eradication efforts through a synergy among law-enforcing institutions, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Monday.

The president made the statement at a coordinative meeting with related ministers and state institutions officials at the presidential office here.

Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa said after the meeting to discuss corruption eradication efforts that the president gave directives to the related institutions to continue the corruption eradication efforts.

"The president chaired the coordinative meeting to listen to explanations from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Constitutional Court, Supreme Court, Attorney General Office, National Police, and related ministers. After listening to the explanations, the president gave directives to the ministers and related state institution to strengthen corruption eradication efforts in the future," Hatta Radjasa said.

According to Radjasa, President Yudhoyono at the meeting said he would continue to eradicate corrupt practices during his next five-year term in office.

"Joint efforts to combat corrupt practices should continue to be improved and stepped up. That is the president's first commitment, and the second is through a synergy among the law-enforcing institutions, namely the Attorney General's Office, the National Police, and KPK," Radjasa said.

In addition, Radjasa said President Yudhoyono had stated that in its corruption eradication efforts, the government would refer to 1945 Constitution and other protective laws to avoid frictions among the law-enforcing institutions.

Although the synergy among the law-enforcing institutions and other related departments was discussed in the coordinative meeting, Radjasa said it was made with existing legal umbrella and therefore there was no need to make new regulations.

Present at the meeting which was also attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla were Supreme Court chairman Harifin Tumpa, Constitutional Court chairman Mahfud MD, Supreme Audit Board chairman Anwar Nasution, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPU) vice chairmen Chandra Hamzah, Bibit Samad Riyanto, Haryono Umar, and M Yasin, Development Finance Comptrolling Agency chairman Didi Widayadi, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affaris Widodo AS, Law and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalatta, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji, National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri, and State Minister for Administrative Reforms Taufik Effendy.***
