BODY OF AUSTRALIAN SHOT IN PAPUA TO BE SENT HOME

Jakarta, July 13 (ANTARA) - The body of Drew Nicholas Grant Lakis, an Australian who was killed in Timika, Papua, last Saturday (July 11), was scheduled to be sent to his country on Monday afternoon.

"The victim's body will be flown to Australia on Monday at 3 pm local time from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang," Inspector General Nanan Sukarna, a spokesman of the National Police, said here on Monday.

The Australian, an employee of US gold and copper mining company PT Freeport, was shot in his chest and neck by unknown persons at Mile 53 in the PT Freeport area, Tembagapura, Mimika District, Papua Province.

An autopsy had been carried out on the victim at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Jakarta, he said.

Based on the autopsy's result, it was confirmed that he died after being hit by a 5.5 mm-caliber rifle bullet, he said.

The National Police Headquarters had sent 58 policemen to help the Papua provincial police probe several shooting incidents in Papua over the past few days.

Since Saturday (July 11), three persons, including the Australian, had died in Papua.

On Sunday (July 12), there were two armed attacks respectively at Mile 51 and Mile 52, which killed Markus Rante Allo, a security guard of PT Freeport, and injured Edi Bunga and Dedi, drivers of the mining company.

Brigadier I Marson, a Papua police officer, who guarded PT Freeport's car, jumped from the car during the shooting and fell into a ravine.

On Monday (July 13), Marson's body was found dead at mile 38 but there was no gunshot wound on his body.

Meanwhile, a report from Australia said the Indonesian police had asked for the help of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to investigate the shooting which had killed Drew Nicholas Grant (38).

Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith in a statement to the press in Brisbane, Sunday, said two AFP personnel from Jakarta had already arrived in Papua province to help Indonesian police solve the shooting case.
