TNI TO SPEND INCREASED DEFENSE BUDGET ON NEW ARMAMENTS

Jakarta, July 14 (ANTARA) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) will use an expected 20-percent increase in the 2010 defense budget to procure replacements for some of its obsolete armaments such as OV-10 Bronco and Hawk MK-53 aircraft, a spokesman said.

The government's plan to raise the defense budget by 20 percent in 2010 was indicated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono recently.

"But we will procure the new hardware in stages because the defense budget rise will also be spent on maintenance and treatment of existing armaments," TNI spokesman Rear Marshal Sagom Tamboen said here on Tuesday.

He said the increased budget would be spent on procurement of MI-17 helicopters for TNI ground force and submarines for the Navy.

"The procurement of these new armaments was actually already proposed to the government some time ago but it could not be realized immediately because of budget constraints," Tamboen said.

He said a new proposal for the procurement of new military hardware was now still being discussed by each of the three armed services before being submitted to the TNI Headquarters to be further considered together with the Defense Ministry and Finance Ministry.

Meanwhile, Defense Ministry Secretary General Lt Gen Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said earlier that the TNI Headquarters would soon hold a joint meeting to discuss which kinds or armament would be given priority in the procurement following the government's plan to raise the defense budget by 20 percent in the 2010 State Budget.

"We have to discuss with TNI Headquarters what we are going to do with the higher defense budget. After that, we will coordinate and discuss it further with related institutions," Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said.
When witnessing the handover of 40 APS 6X6 armored vehicles from TP Pindad to the National Defense Forces (TNI) at the PT Dirgantara Indonesia office in Bandung, West Java, on Friday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government would raise the defense budget by 20 percent in 2010.

"Starting next year the government will raise the defense budget significantly from Rp33.6 trillion this year to Rp40.6 trillion, or an increase by 20 percent in 2010," the president said.

According to the head of state, the budget increase in 2010 would be the starting point of the gradual expansion of the defense budget over the coming years.

"Year after year we are going to increase the defense budget, and so we will get closer and closer to the minimum military strength that we need," the president said, adding the minimum military strength the country should have required a budget of Rp100 to Rp120 trillion. ***
