GOLKAR EXECUTIVE DENIES PARTY SPLIT

Jakarta, July 14 (ANTARA) - A senior Golkar Party executive denied here Tuesday a schism had occurred in the party, saying Golkar had until now remained quite solid
"Rumors that there is a split in Golkar are not true because the party has until now remained quite solid," Pryo Budi Santoso, one of the party's associate chairmen, said after attending a meeting at party chairman Jusuf Kalla's residence late Monday night.

Santoso said the pressure from certain individuals to speed up the holding of an extraordinary national party conference (Munaslub) was something normal but whether their aspiration would be met still had to be decided through an existing internal party mechanism.

"It is really uncivilized to hold an extraordinary Golkar national conference that soon," Santoso said.

He added that if the national extraordinary conference was held before the expiry of Jusuf Kalla's term as the party's chairman, it would be a violation of the party's statutes and rules of association.

Meanwhile, Golkar Party Vice Chairman Agung Laksono said on Monday that the most appropriate position the party could take in the next five years was its present one where it was supporting the government while also criticizing the latter when necessary.

"The position we have taken so far is the most appropriate one," Agung Laksono said at a press conference at the parliament building here on Monday.

Laksono who is also speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) said there had never been a change in the party's position since the party's national conference in Bali some years ago.

He said Golkar's support for the government did not mean it would always support the government's policies.

Golkar was reserving its right to criticize or correct the course of state affairs to ensure the fulfillment of the checks-and balances principle, he said.

Asked about the idea of forming a grand coalition in parliament with opposition parties such as PDIP and Gerindra, Lakksono said it needed to needed to be evaluated further based on the latest political developments.
"The idea stems from the dynamics of the electoral contest between (incumbent President) Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and (incumbent Vice President) Jusuf Kalla," he said.

On Golkar's plan to hold an extraordinary national party conference, Laksono said the meeting's main agenda would be the party's consolidation.***
