PM'S Fate in the Balance As Constitutional Court Delivers Verdict

BANGKOK, Aug 29 (TNA) - Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra faces a pivotal moment in her political career as the Constitutional Court is set to deliver its verdict on her eligibility to hold office.

The ruling could either reinstate her to full power or force her from office, triggering a new political succession process.

The court's nine justices will convene at 9:00 a.m. on Friday to finalize their opinions before the official ruling is delivered at 3:00 p.m. The verdict will be broadcast live, attracting nationwide attention.

Paetongtarn, who has been suspended from her duties since July 1, is expected to arrive at Government House around 2:00 p.m. to await the decision with her cabinet members. She is also prepared to hold a press conference shortly after the court's announcement. Members of the ruling Pheu Thai Party are reportedly gathering at Government House to show their support.

The case was brought forward by 36 senators who petitioned the Constitutional Court to rule on whether Paetongtarn's appointment violated the constitution. The petition, often referred to as the "audio clip case," stems from a reported conversation between Paetongtarn and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, which allegedly raised questions about her constitutional qualifications. The court accepted the case unanimously and voted 7-2 to suspend her from her duties pending the final verdict.

The outcome of the ruling carries significant political implications. If the court rules in her favor, Paetongtarn will return to full duties with her term set to expire in May 2027. However, if she is removed from office, she will be immediately succeeded by Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai as acting prime minister. The "Paetongtarn cabinet" would continue to function until a new prime minister is selected by a parliamentary vote.

Possible candidates for the next prime minister, who must be on their party's list of nominees, include Pheu Thai's Chaikasem Nitisiri and Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul. Other potential candidates from the United Thai Nation Party and the Democrat Party may also be considered. A candidate needs a simple majority of 247 votes in the 492-member House of Representatives to secure the position. - 819 (TNA)
