Bishkek, Sept. 2, 2025 /Kabar/. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov expresses condolences to the people and leadership of Afghanistan in connection with the devastating earthquake in Kunar province, which resulted in numerous casualties.

The media reports that over 800 people were killed and over 3,000 were injured as a result of a powerful earthquake in Afghanistan, the country's Interior Ministry reported on Monday, September 1.

According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake, recorded at 22:17 Moscow time on August 31, was 6.0. The epicentre was located 27 kilometers north-east of the city of Jalalabad (Nangarhar province), near the border with Pakistan. The epicenter was located at a depth of only 8 kilometers. The first tremors were followed by aftershocks of lesser intensity, the dpa news agency reports.

Afghan authorities said that four villages in the province of Kunar in eastern Afghanistan were completely destroyed, while several others were partially damaged.

Telecommunications were disrupted in the affected areas, making it difficult to provide assistance.

Emergency response teams from the Afghan Ministry of Defense have been sent to the eastern provinces to evacuate the wounded. According to eyewitnesses, children and elderly people remain under the rubble. Access for rescuers to a number of settlements in eastern Afghanistan is difficult due to the mountainous terrain.
