PEKANBARU DISTRIBUTES 4,000 MASKS TO ANTICIPATE HAZE

Pekanbaru, Riau Province, July 14 (ANTARA) - Since May 2009, the Pekanbaru health service has distributed 4,000 face masks to a number of community health centers, to anticipate haze which has covered the Riau provincial capital city over the past few days.

"Since May 2009, we have distributed 4,000 face masks to five community health centers in Pekanbaru," Rini Hermiyati, head of the Pekanbaru health service, said here on Tuesday.

Rini said the five community health centers were located near border areas connecting Pekanbaru and other districts/cities.

The community health centers are Sidomulyo, Rumbai, Muara Fajar, Simpang Tiga and Tenayan Raya.

"Muara Fajar community health center has asked for more face masks as its stock is running out," he said.

She said the local health service would not provide more face masks unless the Riau Provincial administration declares the haze as an extraordinary happening.

Rini explained the haze would be declared an extraordinary happening if the visibility is only five meters, and the air pollution standard index (ISPU) shows a dangerous level.

"If we declare it an extraordinary happening, every one must use a face mask if she/he goes out," he said.

Visibility in Pekanbaru during haze is around 500 meters. She advised Pekanbaru's residents limit their out-door activities to avoid haze.

According to the monitoring of the NOAA 18 satellite, there were 140 hotspots in Riau Province on Tuesday, the Pekanbaru meteorological and geophysics office said. There were previously 40 hotspots in Riau.

Twenty hotspots were detected in Bengkalis District, four in Dumai city, 26 in Rokan Hilir (Rohil), 14 in Rokan Hulu (Rohul), 25 in Siak, 3 in Pekanbaru, 17 in Kampar District, 15 in Pelalawan, 8 in Indragiri Hulu (Inhu), 4 in Indragiri Hilir (Inhil), and four in Kuantan Singingi (Kuansing).

Airports in Pekanbaru and Dumai had been closed for several times due to haze.
