RI TO SEND 162 ATHLETES TO ASEAN SCHOOL GAMES

Jakarta, July 14 (ANTARA) - Indonesia plans to send 162 athletes in nine sports branches to compete in the first ASEAN School Games in Suphanburi, Thailand, on July 20-29.

The chief of the Indonesian contingent, Agus Edy Suharto, said here on Tuesday the athletes had since July 6 been gathered here for training.

"They come from the sports school in Ragunan and PLPPs from across the country so that in general they have already trained routinely," he said.

Among the sport branches Indonesia would participate in are swimming, athletics, sepak-takraw, gymnastics, tennis, table-tennis, basket-ball, badminton and volley-ball.

Ten branches will be competed in the event and Indonesia would only miss golf, he said.

Agus said Indonesia targets an overall runner-up in the event.

This event will be the first to be staged by the ASEAN School Sport Council (ASSC) and would be an annual event to be hosted in turn by ASEAN members.

Before ASEAN school championships are held separately in terms of branches.

"From the single event we can measure the performance of Indonesian student athletes compared to students from other countries and therefore we are targeting an overal runner-up," he said.

The Indonesian contingent is expected to be seen off by sports and youth affairs minister Adhyaksa Dault on July 17.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has ten members, namely Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.
