FIVE US WARSHIPS TO JOIN IFR IN BITUNG, INDONESIA

Jakarta, July 15 (ANTARA) - The United States will send five of its warships to Indonesia to take part in an Indonesia Fleet Review (IFR) or warships parade in Bitung, North Sulawesi, on August 17-19, 2009.

"Initially, the US planned to send only two warships but according to the latest confirmation, five US warships will join the event," Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno said here on Wednesday.

Purdijatno said the five warships from the United States would be made up of aircraft carrier George Washington, and four destroyers.

He said some 50 warships from such countries as the United States, ASEAN member and European countries, China, Pakistan, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Russia would join the fleet review in Bitung.

In addition, there would be 10 Indonesian warships, and 150 yachts from 26 countries in North Sulawesi waters during the event.

The presence of the warships shows that other countries respect Indonesia because navies all over the world had close relationships with each other.

The parade is an implementation of military friendship, particularly the navies which had established fraternity at the sea, and recently Indonesia joined a similar parade in China and South Korea.

"It is the special pride of Indonesia to organize the IFR with the participation of around 50 warships from some 32 countries," Tedjo said.

Besides the Indonesia Fleet Review, there will also be sail pass and yacht rally from Darwin, Australia, to Manado, North Sulawesi, fly pass, and social civic mission.

The IFR was organized for the first time on the 50th anniversary of Indonesia's independence day in 1995, and the second one will be in August this year with the participation of US warships.

The Indonesia Fleet Review also shows the existence of Indonesia as the largest maritime country with an incredible maritime potentials.
