NUMBER OF GERMAN TOURIST ARRIVALS IN BALI DOWN
Denpasar, Bali, July 15 (ANTARA) - The number of German tourist arrivals in Bali reached 26,881 during the January-May period in 2009, down 8.83 percent from 29,484 in the same period a year earlier.
"They mostly arrived through Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali, and only 12 German tourists arrived through a seaport," Ida Komang Wisnu, head of the Bali office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), said here on Wednesday.
Germany was the tenth on the list of the ten top countries contributing to Bali's tourist dollar earnings.
The country accounted for 3.09 percent of the total number of foreign tourists (870,029) visiting Bali in the, January-May period in 2009, up 9.76 percent from 792,657 in the same period in 2008.
Last year, a total of 82,827 German tourists visited Bali Island, Indonesia's most famous tourist resort.
Nationality-wise the largest numbers of foreign tourists visiting Bali were Australians (137,018 ), Japanese (132,122), Chinese (85,828), Malaysians (58,192), South Koreans (52,311), Taiwanese (48,168), French (37,256), British (29,215), and Russians (28,829).
The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in the first five months of 2009 reached 2.41 million, up 1.69 percent from 2.37 million during the January- May 2008.
Indonesia hopes to attract 480,000 Australian tourists during the Visit Indonesia Year 2009.
"We are optimistic that we will be able to achieve the target, as the domestic tourism industry is not affected by the global economic crisis," Sapta Nirwandar, director general of the tourism and cultural ministry, said in Jakarta recently.
A total of 165,137 Australian tourists visited Indonesia in January to May 2009, up around 34,338 or 26.25 percent from 130,799 in the same period last year.
Indonesia's target for the Visit Indonesia Year 2009 is 6.5 million foreign tourist arrivals, up 3 percent from the previous year.
