Environment Ministry Adopts 40 Innovative Technologies to Address Water Treatment, Reuse Challenges

Riyadh, September 22, 2025, SPA -- The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has adopted 40 innovative technologies for water treatment and reuse, including algae-based treatment (ATS), nanobubbles, zero liquid discharge (ZLD), pyrolysis, and AI-assisted treatment. The selection followed an analysis of more than 10,000 local and global sources, including scientific publications, patents, sectoral reports, and news, in addition to monitoring over 100 million data points.
The ministry said that the adoption of these technologies was based on the findings of the first national report monitoring innovation trends in the water sector, issued in line with the Kingdom’s sectoral needs. The report was developed according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) 2024 framework for systematic monitoring of emerging technologies, using an integrated scientific methodology that combined artificial intelligence with expert analysis. It reviewed some 27,000 signals related to wastewater treatment and reuse, alongside a detailed evaluation of technical indicators and investment feasibility.
The ministry noted that wastewater treatment and reuse is a key focus area in the Kingdom under the national priority of “Environmental Sustainability and Basic Needs,” one of the research, development, and innovation priorities.
The report outlined major innovation trends, policies, and investment opportunities in emerging technologies, serving as a strategic reference for policymakers, sector leaders, investors, and entrepreneurs. It also included insights from innovation leaders at NEOM’s energy and water company ENOWA, reflecting the vital role of national companies and providing a practical perspective tied to market realities. Supported by data analysis and expert interviews, the report offers actionable frameworks to enhance innovation efforts in the water sector and align with Saudi Vision 2030 targets.
