MEGA-PRO DUO QUESTION QUALITY OF LAST WEEK`S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Jakarta, July 15 (ANTARA) - The Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo Subianto (Mega-Pro) duo are questioning the quality of last week's presidential election.

"The presidential election has taken place but there is a big question whether or not it was really organized democratically," Megawati said after opening a national working meeting of the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) here on Wednesday.

Megawati, who is also the PDIP chairperson said she raised the question because she had received many reports and complaints from the party's grass-roots about election-rule violations during the presidential poll.

She said although the official results of the election were yet to be announced by the General Elections Commission (KPU), PDIP's vote returns in this year's presidential election were better than those in 2004.

The Mega-Pro duo's vote returns were estimated at 26 to 29 percent of the total, she said adding that it indicated PDIP's loyal supporters still existed.

Like Megawati, Prabowo Subianto also claimed to have received many reports from the legal team of the Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party on various violations during the election.

Prabowo, who is also chief patron of Gerindra, said the ways in which the 2009 general elections had been implemented had deviated from the ideals and principles of democracy.

He said the KPU had not been transparent in organizing the poll while there had also been intervention by certain institutions, besides other forms of violations.

"Whether the election has really been carried out democratically is still questionable," Prabowo said.

He said the legal teams of PDIP and Gerindra were studying the various forms of violations that had occurred. The results of their studies would be submitted to the two parties' leaderships which would later decide on what further steps would be taken.

"In the end, we will conclude whether last week's presidential election was in line with the legal principles and deserves to be called 'democratic' or whether it is flawed from the legal and democratic viewpoints," he said. ***
