TNI, US AIR FORCE CONDUCT CIVIC MISSION IN NTT
Kupang, Indonesia, July 15 (ANTARA) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) and the United States Air Force (USAF) here Wednesday launched a civic mission program dubbed "Operation Pacific Angel" which is to run until July 20, 2009.
"The four-day activity in the districts of Kupang and Kota Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is called Operation Pacific Angel," organizing committee chairman Lt Col Ferdinand Roring said here on Wednesday.
Roring said the operation was especially dealing with health affairs and conducted by a joint TNI- USAF team.
The team, according to him, would give free medical treatment to people in Batakte and Oebelo villages in Kupang district, and in Naioni village in Kota Kupang district.
Roring said a USAF cargo plane carrying medicines and health personnel, arrived at Kupang's El Tari airport at 9:30 local time on Wednesday morning.
He said the USAF's C17 aircraft arrived at El Tari airport straight from Hawaii.
Besides conducting the free medical service, the team would also build solar cell and water pumps in the villages to help their residents overcome their clean-water shortage problem.
Roring said the peak of the operation would be marked by a medical evacuation exercise from the air between the TNI and USAF at El Tari airport from July 18-20, 2009.
He said the free medical services would be provided starting on Wednesday in Naioni village and comprise examination and treatment of eye-sight, dental and internal ailments.
Before Operation Pacific Angel, the TNI had twice cooperated with the US military in similar activities.
Meanwhile, Naioni village head Melius Penun said the free health services from the TNI- USAF team of doctors was a purely social activity.
He said almost all of the people in Naioni village were farmers of the low economic level of society, and therefore they desperately needed free-of-charge health services. ***
