Jayapura, Indonesia, July 15 (ANTARA)- Two members of the Papua provincial police's Mobile Brigade were shot by unknown people near Mile 54, Tembagapura, Mimika District, Papua, on Wednesday.
According to information from Timika, the two police personnel from Timika were shot while driving in the area. The perpetrators first shot their car's tires.
The two policemen were respectively Chief Brigadier Jimmy Renhard who was shot in the leg, and First Brigadier Abraham Ngamelubun who was shot in his thigh and buttock.
They are currently being treated at Kuala Kencana Hospital in Timika.
ANTARA wanting to seek confirmation on the latest incident, failed to contact Papua Police Chief Inspector General FX Bagus Ekodanto via phone as the provincial police chief was accompanying Lt Gen Romulo R Simbolon, assistant to the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, in his working visit in Papua.
Lt Gen Simbolon arrived in Timika on Wednesday morning to closely check security posts along the Timika-Tembagapura road.
Meanwhile, PT Freeport has forbidden its employees to travel between Tembagapura and Timika in Papua as of Wednesday (July 15) for security reasons.
A PT Freeport spokesman, Mindo Pangaribuan, told ANTARA company employees whose weekly day-off fell on Wednesday and were now resting in Timika had been requested for security reasons to stay in Timika and not to go to Tembagapura.
Those working in Tembagapura where the company's gold and copper mines are located were not allowed to go to Timika for their own safety, he said.
Several shooting incidents since last Saturday (July 11) have killed three people, namely Drew Nicholas Grant, an Australian who worked for PT Freeport, Markus Rante Allo, a security guard of PT Freeport, and Second Brigadier Marson of the Papua provincial police.
With the latest shooting incident, at least nine people were injured in the shootings by unknown armed group. So far, no one or group has claimed responsible for the shootings. ***
