EGYPT, RI AGREE TO PROMOTE NAM
Jakarta, July 15 (ANTARA) - Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia Ahmed El-Kewaisny said Egypt and Indonesia have agreed to promote the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the face of global challenges.
"Egypt and Indonesia as the founders of NAM have agreed to promote the organization which is composed of more than 120 countries," Ambassador El-kewaisny said here on Wednesday.
Egypt is now hosting the 15th summit of NAM which was opened by President Hosni Mubarak in the resort Red Sea city of Sharm El-Sheikh (55 km east of Cairo), on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.
The ambassador said that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was initially scheduled to attend the summit at the invitation of Mubarak but the Indonesian head of state is not able to attend it because Indonesia had just organized a presidential election.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda attended NAM's ministerial meeting on July 11-14, 2004 in the country of pyramids, however.
Wirajuda attended the meeting at the invitation of the Egyptian government which is the NAM chairman. He was invited through the Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
Egypt is taking over the NAM chairmanship from Cuba for three years to come.
The Egyptian government expressed its commitment to build efforts made by its predecessors in strengthening the NAM roles in the world affairs.
Egypt and Indonesia will always adopt the non-aligned position without involving themselves in left or right extremism.
"Egypt and Indonesia will always adopt the neutral stance based on the spirit of the Afro-Asian conference in Bandung in 1955, even if a number of NAM members have taken a left or right extremist attitude," the ambassador said.
Indonesia and Egypt will always play an important role in reviving the Bandung spirit in NAM in the future, the Egyptian ambassador who assumed his post in Indonesia nine months ago, said.
He said that the world today was facing various global challenges such as economic crisis, terrorism and the spread of several fatal diseases.***
