PRESIDENT: COOPS, SMEs MORE IMPORTANT FOR NAT'L ECONOMY
Samarinda, July 15 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said cooperatives, small and medium enterprises would be more important for the country's economy in the future amid the increasing globalization of the economy.
He made the statement at the commemoration of the 62nd Cooperative Day here on Wednesday.
"Although we are now living in the era of globalization, the role of cooperatives, small and medium businesses will grow even more important in the future," he said.
He said if the national economy did not provide an opportunity for cooperatives, small and medium businesses to develop efforts to reduce poverty, unemployment and to increase people's welfare would be hindered.
So, the solution is that in the future cooperatives, micro-and medium-businesses would be developed more across the country, he said.
He said seeing the development of cooperatives, small and medium businesses in the past five years it was concluded that the government had been on the right track.
He said the government hoped the capital of cooperatives, small and medium businesses could be further increased.
One way to do it was through the KUR micro-credit scheme, he said adding in the past two years the amount of credit extended through the scheme reached Rp34 trillion.
"God willing it can reach Rp100 trillion across the country in the next five years," he said.
Based on data of the office of the state minister of cooperatives the total number of cooperatives in the country in 2008 reached 155,301 units.
The value of their businesses meanwhile reached Rp62.25 trillion in 2008.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics cooperatives' contribution to the creation of gross added value reached up to 24.94 percent and 0.6 percent to gross regional domestic income.
