INDONESIAN CAR MARKET REACHES 40,000 IN JULY
Jakarta, Jul 15 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian car market will reach 40,000 units this month following the improvement of various indicators supporting car sales which had caused the market to become brighter.
Deputy General Chairman of the Indonesian Motor Vehicle Industries Association (Gaikindo) Johnny Darmawan said this month's car market will reach 40,000 units or more. The improvement of the four main indicators supporting the sector had increased the optimism of the automotive industry players.
"The four main factors are liquidity, interest rate, rupiah exchange rate, and movement of the real sector. The four have started to move to a positive development, and I therefore hope that in the second semester the car sales would increase," Johnny said in Jakarta, Wednesday.
He said in the last two months, the restoration of the market had become apparent. This is apparent from the drop in the car market to only 28 percent in the first semester of 209 thousand units. Gaikindo thought the market would drop 35 percent.
At the retail level, sales also showed positive trend, which is apparent from the bigger retail sales than whole sales.
He said the retail market in the January-June 2009 period reached 211 thousand units, the increase was triggered by the speculation by some consumers by making earlier car purchases in the January-March period in anticipation of an increase in prices.
Consequently, the retail figures in that period were always higher than distribution with a difference of 1,000-1,200 units. But starting in April, the consumers preferred postponing their car purchases pending more stabilized prices as the rupiah exchange rate increased.
"We managed to book the sale of 39,000 units last month, which is an increase in order taking," he said.
The car market, he added, up to the end of the year may reach 420-430 thousand units, a drop of 29 percent compared to last year's 607 thousand units. "Although improving, I still think it would be difficult to reach 500 thousand units, because right now the sales are dominated by several segments, like low MPV, which now has a share of 45 percent," he said.
