GARUDA DENIES ITS PILOT HAS SWINE FLU ONCE

Jakarta, July 15 (ANTARA) - The management of Indonesia's national flag-carrier PT Garuda Indonesia (Garuda) firmly denied that one of its pilots known by his initial WA (37), was once tested positive with the swine flue.

"None of Garuda's crew members had the swine flu. It is a misinformation," the airline company's president director Emirsyah Satar told the press after attending a clarification on the lifting of the ban imposed on four Indonesian airline companies to the European Union, along with Ambassador of the European Commission to Indonesia Julisan Wilson and Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal in Jakarta Wednesday.

In fourth week of last month, a number of mass media carried a report on a Garuda pilot with initial WA (37) was once tested positive with the swine flu, but that his condition had later improved.

"He is in a good condition, no complaints, and no fever. We kept him under constant observation until the readings were negative," Director of RSPI Sulianti Suroso Dr Sardikin Giriputro said recently as quoted in a news website.

WA came to the hospital on June 20, 2009 with a fever and cough. "He was sent by a hospital in South Jakarta," Sardikin added.

Emirsyah added that his side fully agreed that the swine flu pandemy needs to be closely monitored, and Garuda had taken every precaution like any other international airline company.

"We also established coordination with other parties like the management of air ports," he said.

He assured however that the impact of swine flu is not as serious as that caused by bird flu.

But Emirsyah was rather reluctant to explain whether or not swine flu has affected Garuda's occupancy rate.

In the meantime, there was an admission from Garuda's General Manager in Beijing, Sentot Mujiono, who said that there was a 10 percent decline for the Beijing-Jakarta route, since the swine flu outbreak.

Garuda served the route three times a week.

Prior to the swine flu outbreak, the occupancy rate on the route reached an average of 70 percent.

Garuda serves the Beijing-Jakarta route on every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and the Jakarta-Beijing route on every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, using the new generation Being 737s.
