Yala Security Tightened After Triple Bomb Scare Near Festival

YALA, Oct 8 (TNA) - Security forces in Thailand’s southern province of Yala have significantly increased vigilance for the annual Chak Phra (pulling of the Buddha image) festival after three coordinated pipe bombs exploded late Tuesday near the event venue. No injuries were reported in the blasts, which occurred at and around the Yala City Municipality Youth Center, the site for the festival running from October 8-10.

The first blast struck just after 9:00 p.m. local time. Two more followed approximately 15 minutes apart, forcing security forces who were responding to the initial explosion to pull back. Authorities confirmed the devices were three pipe bombs, intentionally designed without shrapnel to produce loud noise. They were detonated using digital timers set for staggered times between 9:05 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. 

Officials believe the blasts were meant to create fear and disruption for festival-goers, not cause casualties. In response, a large contingent of police, military, and administrative officials has been deployed. They swept the area to ensure safety and are now maintaining tight security along the procession routes and at the Youth Center as the festival begins today with large crowds pulling decorated Buddha floats. - 819 (TNA)
