POLICE TO TIGHTEN SECURITY AROUND PT FREEPORT AREA

Jakarta, July 16 (ANTARA) - The National Police (Polri) Headquarters will tighten security around PT Freeport's concession area in Timika, Papua, following the deadly shooting incidents over the weekend.

Polri's public relations division spokesman Brig Gen Sulistyo Ishak said here on Thursday security around the Freeport area would be tightened in a bid to create a more conducive situation there.

He said the Police would tighten security in coordination with National Defense Forces (TNI) personnel in the region.

The Police and TNI personnel, according to Sulistyo Ishak, would be deployed in sensitive areas around PT Freeport's mining sites in an effort to prevent more shooting incidents from happening.

In addition, he said, the security personnel would also reach out to the local people to create a sense of togetherness among them.

Asked about the perpetrators of the shootings last Saturday, Sunday and Monday , Sulistyo Ishak said he did not want to speculate because the investigation into the case was still underway.

Meanwhile, Papua affairs observer from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Adriana Elisabeth said in Jayapura on Tuesday that she doubted the Police would be able to solve the case.

"I doubt that the Police will be able to disclose the perpetrators of the deadly shootings in the PT Freeport area in Mimika district, Papua, on Saturday and Sunday," Elisabeth said.

She said the perpetrators of various earlier acts of violence in Papua had never been disclosed transparently because the conflict-prone situation in Indonesia's easternmost province was so complicated.

"It is impossible the police will name the parties involved in the shootings because if the police do so, it will create another conflict," she said.

She said the violent conflicts in Papua had so far always been linked to the existence of the separatist Free Papua Organization (OPM), and the National Liberation Army (TPN) as the OPM's military wing but these groups appeared to have only served as scapegoats for the security disturbances.

According to her, various observations conducted by LIPI in Papua, however, had shown that the OPM's existence in Papua was not as significant as the former Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in Nanggroe Aceh Darusalam (NAD) province.
