PRESIDENT CANCELS PLAN TO VISIT EXPLOSION SITES

Jakarta, July 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had intended to visit the sites of Friday morning's hotel explosions but eventually canceled the plan on security considerations, one of his spokesmen said.

Presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangneng said here Friday, the president had intended to personally witness the scenes of the explosions at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in the Kuningan area but on advice from security officers in the field, he did not go.

"Earlier this morning, the president really wanted to visit the locations of the explosions but after receiving reports that security officers were still at work there, it was decided it was not a good time for the president to visit the sites," Mallarangeng said.

Instead, the president who was at his Cikeas residence, went straight to his office where he was kept informed about developments at the locations by security officials by phone.

At about 10.45 am, three high state officials, namely National Police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri, State Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Syamsir Siregar and Political, Legal and Security Affairs Coordinating Minister Widodo AS, came to the presidential office to report to the president.

The meeting between the president and the three top security officials lasted until the time for Friday prayers and the president was scheduled to speak to the press at 14:00.

There was no information whether the president would still visit the locations of the explosions or see the explosion victims currently being treated in a number of hospitals.

According to the police, nine people are known to have been killed in the explosions which happened at the JW Marriott Hotel and Ritz Carlton Hotel at 07:45 and 07:47 respectively.

About 52 people were injured and taken to a number of hospitals in central and south Jakarta. ***1***
