BEI INDEX PLUNGES ON JAKARTA EXPLOSIONS
Jakarta, July 17 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) opened lower following bomb explosions at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels here on Friday morning.
The BEI index dropped 26.165 points or 1.24 percent to 2,088.454 point, and the LQ-45 index weakened 5.615 point or 1.36 percent to 408.259.
Alfiansyah, a stock broker of PT Sinarmas Securities, said investors decided to release their shares over worries that the bomb explosions which claimed lives might affect the country's economic growth.
However, Alfiansyah believed that the explosions would cause temporary shocks after the government took stern measures to address the incidents.
He said the bomb explosions were not expected to have a further negative impact although it had effected the stock market.
"We are optimistic that the impact of the bomb explosions will not expand further," he said.
He said the BEI index in morning trading would still be under pressure, but the plunge would not be too significant, as the national economic indicators were still sound and even would tend to be better at the end of this year.
Astra Agro Lestari shares went down 100 points to Rp16,500, Bukit Asam shares plunged Rp150 to Rp11,650, United Tractor shares fell Rp150 to Rp10,650 and Bank Danamon shares tumbled Rp75 to Rp3,250.
Private bank BCA shares lost Rp50 to Rp3,750, and state bank BRI shares decreased Rp50 to Rp6,900.
The rupiah tumbled against the US dollar at the Jakarta interbank spot market here early Friday following explosions in two hotels in Jakarta.
The local currency traded at Rp10,165-Rp10,175 per US dollar, down 75 points from Rp10,090-Rp10,105 at the market's close a day earlier.
The death toll of Friday morning's explosions at the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels in central Jakarta has risen to nine while 41 people were injured, including foreigners, police said.
Head of the National Police's Public Relations Division Inspector General Nanang Sukarna said here on Friday eight people were killed on the spot at the JW Marriott Hotel and two at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, while one died at the Medistra Hospital.***
