MINISTER: BOMBINGS NOT TO AFFECT RI`S FOREIGN TRADE

Jakarta, July 17 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said the bombings at two luxury hotels here early on Friday would not affect domestic trade nor the country's trade with other countries.

"As long as we are able to maintain confidence and assure that our airports are safe, they will not affect our international trade," she said at a press conference along with eight other ministers at the finance ministry.

She said the bombings at Hotel JW Marriott and Hotel Ritz Carlton would not affect free-trade negotiations with other countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

"I think it will not be a factor as the finance minister has said. We will continue monitoring developments. We believe our economic fundamentals will not be affected but we will remain alert and prevent their impact from spreading," he said.

The minister also assured domestic supply of basic necessaries was safe. "What we have to assure is that distribution will not be hindered," she said.

She said the security of distribution of basic necessaries ahead of the Islamic fasting month and post-fasting holidays would be the government's main priority.

Apart from that, the government would also take anticipatory measures against threats from El Nino which were potential to affect stocks and distribution of basic necessaries from the end of this year to early next year.

"We have already discussed it with the ministry of agriculture. An anticipatory measure has to be taken because the storm may affect planting seasons, production and stocks for next year. An alert especially has to be taken with regard to scarcity period," she said.***
