PRESIDENT REGRETS CANCELLATION OF MANCHESTER UNITED`S JAKARTA VISIT
Jakarta, July 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he regretted the cancellation of world football club Manchester United (MU)'s plan to play in Jakarta because of Friday's bomb blasts at two hotels in the Indonesian capital.
"This is a very sad thing. If the bombings had not happened, we would be hosting the famous football group for a match in Jakarta," Yudhoyono said at a press conference at the State Palace here Friday.
The President also deplored the occurrence of the bombing incidents when Indonesia had just completed its 2009 general elections (legislative elections last April 9 and a presidential election last July 8).
"I am sure almost all of us now share my dismay and sadness, cry with me inwardly while a handful of people out there are laughing with satisfaction, rejoicing at what they have done out of rancor, fury and vengefulness," he said.
The perpetrators of the violence did not care about the disastrous and far-reaching consequences of their terrorist acts for the country's business climate, investment, tourism and international image.
The bombings were all the more deplorable as over the past five years Indonesia had been enjoying security, stability and a fair degree of economic growth, he said.
He said he had instructed all law enforcing agencies to investigate the incidents quickly and thoroughly, and remain on high alert.
Yudhoyono also asked the public to go about their daily activities normally while remaining on their guard so as to be able to notice any suspicious things that might happen in their immediate surroundings.
Following the explosions at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in the Mega Kuningan area on Friday morning, the Manchester United's management was reported to have canceled its plan to let the football club visit Jakarta for a match citing security concerns.
An MU eleven was earlier scheduled to play against a national Indonesian team on July 20. For their stay in Jakarta, the MU team had been booked at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.***
