UNSC HOLDS UNSCHEDULED MEETING ON RI BOMBINGS
New York, July 18 (ANTARA) - The UN Security Council (UNSC) held an unscheduled meeting on Friday to discuss the situation in Indonesia following the bombings in Jakarta.
The meeting on the bombings of JW Marriott Hotel and Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jakarta ended with an expression of deep sympaty and condolences to the victims, their families, and the Government of Indonesia.
In a statement read out by the Council's President for July, Ruhakana Rugunda of Uganda, the Council underlined the need for and affirmed its confidence in the Indonesian government to bring the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of those reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.
The UN Security Council also urged all states to cooperate actively with the Indonesian authorities in that regard.
Reaffirming the need to combat threats to international peace and security by all means, in accordance with the United Nations Charter, the Council also reminded states that measures to combat terrorism must comply with all their obligations under international law, particularly international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.
The 15-member panel stressed the need to bring the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of the bombings to justice and urged all states to cooperate with Indonesian authorities as they pursue that goal.
"The Security Council reaffirms that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," the statement said.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also strongly condemned the bombings in Jakarta and extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes those injured a speedy recovery.
Media reports said the blasts occurred almost simultaneously at about 7:30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Friday at the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels in the central business district of the Indonesian capital.
The UN Secretary-General recognized the steadfast efforts that the Indonesian government has made in bringing to justice perpetrators of past terrorist acts.
He also expressed confidence that these new attacks would be investigated with equal resolve and that those responsible will be prosecuted.
