PRESIDENT NOT POLITICIZING HOTEL BOMBINGS

Jakarta, July 18 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's statement on Friday's bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels was not an attempt to politicize the incident, one of his party's executives said.

"President Yudhoyono is not politicizing the bombing incident whatsoever. The president's statement reflects his anger at terrorist acts that are having a disastrous impact on development in the country," Democratic Party (PD) Associate Chairman Anas Urbaningrum said here on Saturday.

Urbaningrum said as the bombings had caused extensive damage, it was natural for the president to express his anger and to say the government would take firm and appropriate actions against the perpetrators including their mastermind.

He said President Yudhoyono strongly condemned the bomb attacks
on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels that had left at least nine people dead and 52 others injured.

President Yudhoyono said at a press conference at the presidential palace on Friday that the incidents which occurred just after the peaceful implementation of the presidential elections on July 8 would certainly have an effect on many activities in the country.

"Today marks a black chapter in our history. The bombings were the acts of terrorists. A terrorist network must have been behind the terrorism although it may not be one we already know about," the president said.

President Yudhoyono also said that according to an intelligence report there would be violent acts against the law to reject the results of the July 8 presidential election.

"There was a plan to occupy the General Elections Commission (KPU) during the announcement of the results of the ballot counting. There was also a statement saying there would be 'revolution' if SBY won, 'we will turn Indonesia into another Iran, and lastly there was a statement saying that SBY should not be reinaugurated (as president)," he said.

Urbaningrum said President Yudhoyono's statement in mentioning the election results was even an effort to spur the police to speed up investigation into the case.***
