MINISTER: REGIONAL GOVTS SHOULD INTENSIFY TRADITIONAL MARKET REVITALIZATION

Jakarta, July 18 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu
has asked regional administrations to further intensify the traditional market revitalization program in their respective region over the next five years.

"Regional governments are expected to play a bigger role in cooperation with the private sector, such as Bank Danamon, in revitalizing existing traditional markets," Trade Minister Pangestu said here on Saturday when launching the Second National Clean Market Day at Kramat Jati Main Market, East Jakarta.

According to the minister, revitalization of 13,450 traditional markets throughout Indonesia which accommodate 12,650,000 small traders are very crucial for the national economic development.

"We hope that the traditional market development could create more jobs and contribute to the national economic growth," she said.

For 2009, the trade minister in cooperation with the regional administrations plan to revitalize 94 traditional markets, and 37 of the total markets use stimulus funds for the trade sector.

"We need to have a five-year program for the market revitalization and we better focus on the existing markets," she said.

The minister said the budget had been disbursed almost two months ago and the bidding and development processes could begin soon because the works should be completed by the end of this year.

On the occasion, the Danamon Care Foundation has submitted a proposal to be registered at the Indonesian Record Museum for its success in cleaning 750 traditional markets in one day and in helping set up a waste management system to turn garbage into compost in 31 cities and districts. ***
