FLOATING MARKET FESTIVAL IN SOUTH KALIMANTAN

Banjarmasin, Indonesia, July 18 (ANTARA) - A floating market cultural festival is being held here for three days, July 18-20, 2009.

The cultural festival was aimed at promoting cultural tourism of South Kalimantan to domestic as well as foreign tourists, Bihman Muliansyah, head of the South Kalimantan youth, sports, tourism and cultural service, said here on Saturday.

Thousands of people from Banjarmasin and its surrounding cities attended the opening of the festival held at the office of the South Kalimantan governor, here on Saturday.

The opening of the festival was highlighted with performance of South Kalimantan traditional dances and a parade of decorated traditional boats floating on Martapura Banjarmasin River.

The festival's activities were basically organized in two places, namely on land and on river located across the South Kalimantan governor 's office.

The on-land activities include an exhibition, dance performance, traditional martial art demonstration, and a spin of top contest. The exhibition which has 40 stands, sells various traditional food and handicrafts.

On Martapura Banjarmasin River, the activities include a floating market attraction, a decorated traditional boat parade, and a fire work show.

The floating market festival is organized every year to promote the province's tourism, Bihman said.

Banjarmasin is known as a 'city of thousand rivers'. The floating market is unique as transaction of sales are done on boats along the rivers. The merchants bring land product such as fruits, vegetables, food and it handicrafts. This activity takes place from 05.00 to 09.00 mornings. Its location resides in among other thing Barito River. ***
