NO EXODUS OF FOREIGN TOURISTS FROM RI : MINISTER

Jakarta, July 18 (ANTARA) - There is no exodus of foreign tourists from Indonesia following Friday's bombing of two luxury hotels in Jakarta, Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said here Saturday.

"Checks at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta and Bali's Ngurah Rai international airports have not shown a sudden increase in foreign tourist departures from Indonesia. This indicates foreign tourists already in the country are not too worried about the terrorist bombings," Wacik said.

However, the impact of the incidents on foreigners' plans to visit Indonesia was beginning to be felt. Examples were the cancellation of football club Manchester United's plan to play in Jakarta and the issuance of travel warnings on Indonesia by Singapore and Australia.

"But the foreign parties' actions are understandable and a challenge to us to work hard to restore the world community's confidence," he said.

He noted the terror attacks occurred at a time when Indonesian tourism was developing well with the occupancy rates of hotels in Jakarta and Bali reaching 70 percent and 80 percent respectively.

Foreign tourist trust in Indonesia had lately also begun to increase. "We must continue to work to return to this trend," Wacik said.***
