Why Does Water Flow Year-Round in the Village of Thee Ain?

Al-Baha, December 26, 2025, -- The continuous year-round flow of water in the village of Thee Ain, located in Al-Makhwah Governorate, is sustained by an ingenious ancient irrigation system that channels water from a natural spring called Al-Qalla, situated at the village’s highest elevation.
From this source, the water travels through a meticulously carved rocky channel designed to prevent erosion and cascades down small waterfalls to reach the agricultural terraces.
To manage this vital resource, the residents of Thee Ain developed sophisticated water distribution mechanisms, most notably a traditional rotational irrigation system known as Atwafs, which operates on twelve fixed time-based turns to ensure equitable water distribution among all farms and households.
This traditional water governance has ensured a steady flow despite climate fluctuations and periods of low rainfall. Consequently, the villagers have been able to sustain the cultivation of signature crops such as bananas and coffee. This enduring connection to their water heritage remains a cornerstone of their identity, reflected in local customs and folk songs. Ultimately, the waters of Thee Ain represent a profound cultural and environmental asset that has supported life and agriculture for centuries.
