MAGNITUDE-5.6 QUAKE ROCKS SUMBAWA BESAR

Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara, July 20 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale rocked Sumbawa Besar in West Nusa Tenggara province on Monday, prompting hundreds of residents to rush outdoors.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 10.37 a.m. was located 60 km southeast of Sumabawa Besar at a depth of 21 km, according to data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The quake was strongly felt by local residents with some of them rushing outdoors to avoid the possibility of their houses collapsing, Zaenuddin, a local resident, said.

There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

Monday's quake was the fourth tremblor with a magnitude of more than 5.0 to hit the province in two months.

The province was last hit by a 5.4 magnitude quake on July 9. The tremblor was centered 255 km southeast of Taliwang, West Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of 38 km.

On June 16, a quake with a magnitude of 5.1 shook the province with the epicenter located 43 km southwest of Raba, West Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of 10 km.

Earlier, on June 7, a 5.7 magnitude quake also rattled West Nusa Tenggara. The epicenter of the quake was located 38 km southwest of Raba at a depth of 105 km.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

The country was hit hardest by a 8.9 magnitude undersea quake and a subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004 when more than 200,000 people perished. ***3***
