S KOREA TO IMPORT TWO MILLION TONS OF GORONTALO MAIZE
Gorontalo, Indonesia, July 21 (ANTARA)- The Gorontalo provincial government and South Korea will soon follow up their cooperation agreement under which the latter will import two million tons of maize from Gorontalo, a local official said.
Head of Gorontalo's Agricultural Service, Yusuf Hamidun said here on Tuesday that a South Korean group company already had the commitment to import two million tons of maize in the coming ten years.
"South Korea's Harim Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gorontalo province's government on a mutual purchase of both sides' agricultural products," Hamidun said.
Hamidun said that Harim Group President Y.L. Chang had promised to purchase maize from Gorontalo. "Besides purchasing maize, Harim Group which has its headquarters in Gorontalo, will also carry out other business activities in the country," he added.
He said that the South Korean company was expected to build this year a maize drying facility in Libuo village, Paguat subdistrict, Pohuwato district.
In the meantime, the Kwandang orchid seaport in North Gorontalo district, will be used as the main export seaport to South Korea.
It will also develop maize plantation in an effort to meet an annual production target of 150,000 tons.
The company will also develop a maize quality upgrading facility in an effort to reduce the aflatoxin content of the product from 100 ppb to 50 ppb with a maximum water content of 14.5 percent.
Hamidun said that South Korea also wanted to import not only maize but also other raw materials such as maize and sugar cane biomass residue molasses.
In the meantime, Gorontalo Governor Fadel Muhammad said last week that Sri Lanka was also interested in importing maize from Gorontalo.
"But I suggest that Sri Lanka plant maize and import its seeds from Gorontalo," Fadel said.
According to Fadel, Sri Lanka shared similarities with Gorontalo with regard to the climate and geographical conditions which were suitable for maize cultivation. ***2***
