C JAVA POLICE ARREST NOORDIN M TOP FOLLOWER
Solo, Indonesia, July 23 (ANTARA) - Central Java Police Chief Insp Gen Alex Bambang Riatmodjo said his personnel had arrested one of fugitive Noordin M Top's followers.
"The man we arrested has admitted he was recruited by Noordin M Top to become a suicide bomber," Bambang Riatmodjo said here on Thursday.
Riatmodjo said the arrested man admitted he was told by Noordin M Top that he would go to heaven if he died in a suicide bombing.
"The member of the Noordin M Top terrorist ring we arrested in Cilacap, Central Java, is a man identified by his initial as A," Riatmodjo said.
"We are going to hand him to the National Police Headquarters today (Thursday)," Riatmodjo said, refusing to mention when and where the man was nabbed.
He said the man would be handed to the National Police Headquarters for further investigation.
The fugitive Malaysian-born extremist Noordin Muhammad Top was
believed linked to last Friday's bombings on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta, a senior anti-terror official said.
"From the modus operandi used in Friday's bombings, it is clear they are linked to Noordin M Top," Ansyaad Mbai, head of the anti-terror desk at the political, legal and security affairs coordinating ministry, said on Saturday.
Although the modus operandi was conventional, it was carried out in a more sophisticated way, namely by infiltrating into the target area, he said.
"Previously, suicide bombings were conducted outside, in a hotel's front yard, for instance. But this time, the perpetrators dodged a tight security system and came very close to their target," Mbai said.
Although over the past four years no terrorist actions occurred in Indonesia, Noordin M Top and his network cells continued to consolidate themselves actively despite the security agencies' successes in tracing and arresting Noordin M Top's men, he said.
"Friday's incident proves that they are still strong. Arresting Noordin M Top, the actor, should now be the priority. As long as the actor is still at large, all anticipative measures will be useless," he said.***
