PRESIDENT PRAISES GARUDA`S FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE
Cengkarang, Indonesia, July 23 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono praised the financial performance of PT Garuda Indonesia because it was able to book a net profit of Rp669 billion in 2008.
The president made the commendation at the inauguration of a PT Garuda Management building at the M-1 Office Complex of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport here on Thursday.
He said that the profit obtained by PT Garuda also contributed to the increase in state revenues through dividends and taxes national flag carrier paid to the state.
In 2004, the national airlines still suffered from a loss of Rp811 billion and Rp688 billion in 2005. In 2006, the losses suffered by Garuda declined to Rp197 billion.
However, in 2007, Garuda was able to make a turn around and increased its profit to Rp60 billion where in 2008 the profit could already reach Rp669 billion.
"On behalf of the state and the government I would like to congratulate, thank and appreciate the Garuda management on the achievement and good financial performance it has made," the president said.
With a net profit of that amount, the president expressed confidence that Garuda would be able to build a better corporate governance so that it would be able to compete amid the stiff airlines business competition.
Besides praising its financial performance, the president also appreciated the company's corporate governance and its better flight service to the public.
With the increasing development of regional and global economies after the world economic crisis, the president asked Garuda to make more innovations and adapt itself to changes.
"It seems that we are facing a big economic opportunities ahead. We could create these opportunities, without waiting, in the national, regional and global levels," Yudhoyono said.
The head of state predicted that in the ASEAN region alone, air transportation would become more developed in line with the adoption of the new ASEAN charter and the economic growth in the region.
"With regard to air transportation, Garuda and other airlines should develop strong, credible and increasingly better flight fleets," he said. ***
