BEI INDEX OPENS SLIGHTLY HIGHER EARLY FRIDAY

Jakarta, July 24 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) opened slightly higher here on Friday morning, as investors continued to buy shares on gains at regional bourses.

The BEI index rose 0.71 percent or 15,375 points to 2,176.149 and the LQ-45 index went up 0.83 percent or 3.522 points to 425.791.

Positive sentiment of the regional market encouraged investors to hunt for blue chip and small-cap shares which were considered of having low prices, Ahmad Riyadi, a stock market broker, PT Millenium Danatama Securities.

Investors purchased shares of companies such as Astra Internasional, Gudang Garam, United Tractor, and Indo Tambang Mega, which could further increase.

The Indonesian stocks still had a chance to pass the level of 2,200 points following gains at regional bourses and Wall Street, he said.

The Wall Street bourse have rallied over the past one week following a report of the US Federal Reserve (the FeD) which said that the US had passed the foundation of the global crisis pressure, and the US economic growth was expected to improve early next year, he said.

Astra Int shares went up Rp400 to Rp27,800, Gudang Garam shares jumped Rp200 to Rp13,050, United Tractor shares surged Rp150 to Rp11,450, Telkom shares rose Rp100 to Rp8,350, and BRI and Bank Danamon shares climbed to Rp6,800 and Rp4,650.

The rupiah passed the level of Rp10,000 per US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Friday as investors continued to purchase the local currency.

The Indonesian currency traded at Rp9,990-Rp10,000 per US dollar, up 38 points from Rp10,028-Rp10,035 per US dollar at the market's close a day earlier.

The rupiah climbed as investors were confident that Indonesia continued to be a potential market for investments, he said.
