BANGGAI EXPORTS NICKEL TO AUSTRALIA, CHINA

Luwuk, INDONESIA, July 25 (ANTARA) - Banggai district in Southeast Sulawesi has exported 189,056 metric tons of nickel to Australia and China over the past two years until the first semester of this year.

The head of geology affairs of the district's mining and energy service, Mohammad Arif, said to ANTARA here on Saturday exports to Australia reached 137,156 metric tons done in five shipments while to China 51,900 metric tons done in one shipment.

He said the exports were carried out by two multinational companies namely PT Aneka Nusantara Internasional (ANI) and PT Anugerah Tompira Nikel (ATN).

PT ANI has mining concessions in the subdistrict of Bunta while PT ATN in Mamasa.

Arif predicted nickel exports from the region in the second semester this year would increase above 100 percent because the two companies had continued increasing their production capacity to meet orders from Australia and China.

"Moreover in the near future several other companies that have obtained a license to mine up to 50,033 hectares are entering the stage of production to increase nickel production in the region," he said.

Arif said he did not know yet the value of the nickel exports as he had not yet received reports from the companies.

He said the companies shipped the commodity in the form of raw materials and not finished products while nickel exports from the district had not yet been put in the list of the province's non-oil and gas exports.

Banggai had so far been known as exporter of frozen shrimps to France and several East Asian countries besides other marine products, oil and vegetable oils to East Asia.

Arif hoped the central government would immediately issue government regulations to implement Law Number 4 of 2009 on mining so that mining companies could manage their production into minimally half-finished products.

"This is very important so that mining activities in the region could give an additional value to the region and its people," he said.***
