H1N1 VIRUS SPREADING IN 15 RI PROVINCES

Jakarta, July 27 (ANTARA) - Influenza A (H1N1) virus has affected 400 people in 15 out of Indonesia's 33 provinces, the health ministry said.
The provinces were Bali, Banten, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, Riau Islands, North Sulawesi, South Sumatra, North Sumatra, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi and Jambi, the ministry's public communication center said in a press statement on Monday.

The ministry's director general of disease control and environment health, Tjandra Yoga Aditama said the disease spread quickly from human to human among others through coughing and sneezing.

Tjandra said the disease might lead to death but globally, it had a low death rate, namely 0.4 percent. In Indonesia, only one out of 400 people infected with H1N1 virus had died.

He said people could prevent themselves from being infected with the H1N1 virus by leading a clean and healthy life such as washing hands with soap or antiseptic and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing.

"When you feel influenza symptoms, take body temperature lowering medicine, wear a face mass, avoid travel, and take a rest for two days. And if you don't recover in two days' time, go to the doctor," he said.

He said the government had made concerted efforts to prevent the spread of the disease by monitoring H1N1 flu cases through port health services, preparing reference hospitals and anti virus medicines, intensifying surveillance against influenza-typed diseases, preparing laboratories and increasing campaign in disease prevention.

The ministry said last Friday 21 new cases of H1N1 virus were found in Jakarta, West Java, Banten, Riau Islands, Bali, Yogyakarta, North Sumatra, East Java, East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan.

The patients including some foreigners mostly had a history of traveling to infected countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea.***
