INDONESIAN MUSLIMS` MAIN PROBLEMS ECONOMIC IN NATURE : OBSERVER

Jakarta, July 27 (ANTARA) - The main problems being faced by Muslims in Indonesia and other developing countries in Asia are economic, a political observer said.

"The primary problems of Muslims in Indonesia and other developing countries in Asia are economic in nature," Muslim-oriented political observer Bahtiar Effendy said at an international seminar on "The Muslim World and the Future of Civilizations" here on Monday.

He said 70 percent of the Indonesian people are Muslim and most of them still live below the standard prosperity line.

Similar conditions, according to Effendy, were also being faced by other Muslim countries in Asia such as Pakistan.

In light of this situation, Effendy said, Muslims around the world should build solidarity to help economically-disadvantaged Muslim countries.

Meanwhile, a speaker from Pakistan, Dr Raja Zafarullah Haq, said Muslims had made great contributions to world's development in the fields of science and civilization.

But after being invaded and colonized, countries where Muslims made up the majority of the population became inferior compared to countries in the west.
"The policies pursued by developing countries are still being influenced by their former colonial rulers," Zafarullah Haq said, adding that Indonesia was a former Dutch colony while India, Pakistan, and Malaysia were former British colonies.

Therefore, Effendy and Zafarullah Haq called on Middle East Muslim countries in the north to help Muslim countries in the south.

Effendy said Islamic teachings should be applied not only in practice but also in the sector of world civilization, culture and economy.
In a similar vein, Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) chairman H Amidhan said the application of Islamic teachings should reduce the social and economic imbalances between the rich Muslim countries in the north and the poor Muslim countries in the south.

"Muslim countries in the north should give not only education but also economic assistance to developing countries in the south," Amidhan said.***
