GOVT TO DISTRIBUTE RICE FOR POOR UNTIL 2010

Blitar, Indonesia, July 27 (ANTARA) - The government will continue to distribute subsidized rice for the poor until 2010, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said here on Monday.

"The program of meeting the food needs of poor families is aimed at increasing the people's welfare and therefore we will continue the subsidized rice program until 2010," he said during a working visit in Blitar, East Java.

Aburizal had come to Blitar to hand over direct financial assistance for the people under the 2009 National Self-Reliant Community Empowerment Program (PNPM) and Smallholder Credit Scheme (KUR).

He said the rice-for-the poor program was one of the instruments to overcome poverty.

Nationally, the number of families to receive the rice aid of 15 kilograms per month in 2009 reached 18.5 million. The rice aid will be distributed for 12 months to the families concerned. He said he hoped the aid could help improve their welfare.

Aburizal said the subsidized price of the rice was Rp1,600 per kilogram which was lower than the market price which is between Rp5,000 and Rp6,000 per kilogram.

He said he hoped the distribution of the aid until July 2009 could reach 88.87 percent or around 51.73 percent of total aid to be distributed until December.

The Blitar district administration spokesman, Totok Subihandono, meanwhile said his office had allocated subsidized rice for 82,354 families.

"Until now its realization has reached 66.67 percent," he said.

He said efforts would be continued to finish the rest. With regard to the 2010 he said verifications would be done to assure the aid would go to the rightful.***
