FIRE RAZES 153 HOUSES IN SAMARINDA

Samarinda, E Kalimantan, July 28 (ANTARA) - Fire ravaged at least 153 houses in a densely-populated area in the East Kalimantan provincial capital of Samarinda in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The blaze spread quickly as most of the houses made of wood were located close from one to another, M. Fahmi, Pelita village head in North Samarinda, said.

The fire broke out at around 02.00 am and was put out nearly three hours later, he said.

"We have yet to receive any report of casualties although as we all know the fire broke out as many residents were still in their beds," he said.
He said fire fighters and police officers were combing every part of the fire scene in their search for possible casualties.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.

"We still cannot establish the cause of the blaze. We are still investigating it," chief of the North Samarinda police precinct Adj. Comms. Andreas Susanto Nugroho said.

Eyewitnesses said the fire came from one of the houses and later spread to other buildings.

Andreas said at least 25 fire trucks were sent to the scene to extinguish the fire, one of the worst that ever hit the city.

Fire fighters had difficulties putting out the blaze because of the narrow street leading to the scene, he said.
There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.***3***
