DROUGHT AFFECTED AREAS EXPANDING IN TANGERANG

Tangerang, July 27 (ANTARA) - Areas affected by the dry spell in Tangerang's northern coastal regions, Banten province, are expanding, creating water scarcities to irrigate thousands of hectares of paddy fields, a regional government official said.

"At present at least 11 sub-districts in Tngerang District, Banten provinde, are now affected by drought and facing water scarcities," Secretary of Tangerang Regional Government, H Hermansyah said here on Monday.

He said that the 11 subdistricts which were affected by the dry spell were Teluknaga, Kosambi, Mauk, Sukadiri, Kronjo, Pakuhaji, Sepatan, Rajeg, Kemiri, Kresek and Pasar Kemis. The total areas affected in this sub-districts were estimated at 1,500 hectares.

The most affected ones are paddy fields in the sub-districts of Pakuhaji, Kronjo and Kresek because rice fields here were rain-fed and these subdistricts had no water sources to irrigate them.

He said that although the impact of the drought was predicted to be small, yet the government was preparing Rp2 trillion to anticipate the impact of a possible El Nino related drought.

In the meantime, deputy to the minister for agricultural and maritime affairs, Bayu Krisnamurti said on Monday the government was preparing a step to face the impact of drought this year.

Krisnmurti said, however, that the impact of the 2009-2010 El Nino-triggered drought would not be as bad as that in the 1997-1998 dry spell. After all, rice production this time was much higher than that in the 1997-1989 dry season.

He said that the country's second rice production forecast showed an increase of 3.71 percent or equivalent with 62.56 million tons of unhusked rice if compared with that in 2008.

Based on the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG)'s prediction, the September-October 2009 El Nino was expected to have a moderate impact, though it would become stronger in November 2009.***3***
