COURT TO SETTLE ELECTION LAWSUITS IN 10 DAYS
Musi Rawas, July 27 (ANTARA) - The lawsuits that have been filed by two presidential candidates to the Constitutional Court on the implementation of the recent election will be settled in 10 days' time, a court official said.
"In the last legislative elections a total of 750 cases were referred to the court and all of them have been settled. The number of cases in the presidential election on July 8 is around 150 and we will settle them in 10 days' time although we are given 14 days " one of the court's judges, Akil Muchtar, said.
Jusuf Kalla and Megawati Soekarnoputri challenged the result of the presidential election on July 8 after they found irregularities in the implementation of the election.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) declared incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono the winner in the race with 60.80 of votes. Megawati finished second while Jusuf Kalla third.
Akil said nine judges would be assigned to deal with the complaints and they would work extra-hard so that all cases coming to the court concerning the implementation of the presidential election can be handled quickly and a permanent ruling could be made on them.
He said the court's decision would be final and binding and must be implemented by the General Elections Commission (KPU) and parties concerned.
After the announcement of the final result of vote counting by the KPU, candidates were given three days to file complaints which would be settled in 14 days.
Plaintiffs must prepare materials of evidence so that the court could produce rulings quickly within the limit of time provided for it to the court, he said.
Akil said his office would work professionally and independently so the rules it would later make were based on facts and evidence.
"If, after the ruling, there are still parties who object well, go ahead. The court' ruling however is basically incontestable and binding and therefore must be implemented by all parties," he said.
