MINISTRY ON ALERT AGAINST ILLEGALLY IMPORTED GOODS
Jakarta, July 28 (ANTARA) - The Trade Ministry is on alert against the possible illegal entry into the country of consumer goods such as foods, drinks, garments and shoes in the face of the Ramadhan fasting month, a trade official said.
"We will continue to keep watch against the illegal entry of goods whose imports are subject to the trade minister's decree in the runup to the Idul Fitri or post-fasting month festivities," Internal Trade Director General Subagyo said.
He said demand for goods such as foods, drinks, garments and shoes in the runup to the festivities would increase by about 20 percent. This would encourage the entry of illegal imports.
"We will coordinate with the Customs and Excise Office to increase supervision. We will also coordinate with other relevant agencies to tighten control if illegal goods are able to enter the country without the customs office notice," he said.
He said that his office had sent letters to the industry and trade services in the provinces to prepare investigators for intensifying control in their respective areas in the face of the fasting month and Idul Fitri holidays.
In the meantime, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said on Monday the government was launching the "I Love Indonesia" campaign.
"This campaign is not a protectionist ploy at all . It is designed to increase people's love for domestic products and stimulate domestic consumption," she said.
She said the participation of state-owned companies in the campaign was expected to encourage people to love domestic products and private companies to participate in the campaign.
"The trade ministry only allocates around Rp3 billion for it. It is not much because we do not have funds to pay advertisements and therefore we are cooperating with state-owned companies," she said.***
