ACADEMIC PROPOSES NAMING SOEHARTO 'NATIONAL HERO'

Karanganyar, July 29 (ANTARA) - An academic at a seminar here voiced the opinion that former President Soeharto deserves to be awarded the title of "national hero."

"Soeharto has a lot of meritorious services to his credit and enormously dedicated himself to the state and nation's interests, and therefore we want to propose that he be named a national hero," Surakarta Sebelas Maret State University (UNS) lecturer Warto said here on Wednesday.

Aside from a number of legal questions involving the former president, Warto said, the facts in Indonesian history indicated that Soeharto had rendered great services to the country and therefore he deserves the title of national hero, he said.

"Soeharto's struggle for Indonesia, as recorded in books on national history, include his involvement in the physical revolution beteen 1945 and 1949, the post physical revolution between 1962 and 1967, and his leadership as president," Warto said.

He said that during the physical revolution, Soeharto played a significant role in the armed struggle against Dutch military forces who wanted regain control over Indonesia. And one of his most memorable feats was the driving out of Dutch troops from Yogyakarta in 1949.

Warto added that Soeharto's role in the post physical revolution was his being Mandala Military Commander to regain the then Irian Barat (Papua) from the the Netherlands.

"In addition, Soeharto also played an active role in preventing Indonesia from being ruled by the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI)," Warto said at a national seminar on "The Nationalism of Great General Soeharto" at the Tien Soeharto Monument in Karanganyar district.

He said Soeharto's "National Development Trilogy" concept was also one of the considerations to propose him as a national hero.

Warto said those considerations were the facts and therefore the proposal to make Soeharto a national hero should be seriously considered by the government.

Meanwhile, Karanganyar District Legislative Assembly (DPRD) speaker Juliatmono said Soeharto's Five-year Development Plans (Repelitas) were also one of his meritorious services to the nation.

"In my opinion the Repelitas were tangible programs that can be considered as parameters of Indonesia's development succeses under Soeharto's leadership," Juliatmono said, adding that through the Repelitas, Indonesia's economic growth averaged 7 percent year after year.
