POLICE FIRED 246 OFFICERS IN 2008

Bandung, W Java, July 29 (ANTARA) - The National Police dismissed a total of 246 of their officers during 2008 for various offenses, a spokesman said.

"We have continued to take action against bad policemen. As a matter of principle, we fire personnel who prove to be unfit to serve in the force," said Insp Gen Nanan Soekarna, head of the National Police Headquarters' Public Relations division, here Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after a seminar on the police's professionalism, the spokesman said that the National Police's total personnel strength was 400,000 spread across the country so the 248 officers who were discharged last year represented just a small fraction of the entire force.***
