Baku, July 31 (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan adopted a pardon act on the eve of Nowruz holiday, an initiative launched by President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador, MP, Ms Mehriban Aliyeva.
The act applied to 9,564 convicts, including 8,604 men, 960 women and 23 juveniles.
The act saw release of 2,030 convicts who served their sentence in detention facilities and 137 in disciplinary military units. Some 516 convicts had their sentence halved by the amnesty decree.
In addition, 1,600 people who were kept under custody, 2,853 inmates of correctional facilities, 198 convicts assigned to public works and 1,860 people who were fined a total of nearly AZN670,000 had their penalties annulled.
Another 369 people pardoned by the act were those granted a probation, deferred adjudication or parole. Some 95% of the convicts pardoned by the amnesty decree were petty offenders.
In 1995 nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev revived pardon and amnesty institutions in Azerbaijan. Ever since the country has adopted 9 amnesty acts to pardon over 96,000 convicts, with 25,000 of them set free.
The Heydar Aliyev Foundation believes those affected by this pardon act will become worthy citizens of modern Azerbaijani state, respect the country`s laws and serve their motherland and people with dignity.
