RI, THAI MILITARIES AGREE TO STEP UP COOPERATION

Jakarta, Aug 1 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) and Royal Thai Armed Forces (RTARF) have agreed to step up their cooperation, particularly in education, exercises, and intelligence operations.

The agreement was reached at the 3rd conference of TNI-RTARF high military commission in Pattaya, Thailand, from July 29-30, 2009, said a TNI Headquarters statement here on Saturday.

According to the statement, the two sides at the conference reported developments that had taken place so far in their cooperation in the fields of education, exercises and intelligence operations.

Meanwhile, TNI Chief Gen Djoko Santoso said in operations and security measures affecting the Malacca Strait, the RTARF's participation was of great significance.

The two sides also agreed to establish bilateral cooperation in disaster management and non-combat joint military operations.

"The cooperation between the Indonesian and Thai militaries is of great importance because the two countries are still prone to natural disasters," Djoko Santoso said.

He said that in the field of training and education, both parties had agreed to step up exchange of visits by their their military officers and soldiers.

The militaries of the two countries had also agreed to exchange intelligence information because quick and accurate intelligence data would smooth security operations in the two countries.***
